Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge Technology in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with video review technology

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in implementing replay systems.

Video review systems are set to arrive at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Players will gain the ability to question certain decisions made by the chair umpire, following the system already in place at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be operational on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development comes just a year after the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to re-examine specific situations, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the amount of challenges a competitor can ask for.

Practical Application

A recent incident occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire viewed a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, granting the point to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further innovation at The Championships this year involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where fans have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was out or in.

Finally, with exactly 100 days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
