Tetris Didn't Succeed at The Game Awards — A New Category Could Fix That

As any major prize-giving event approaches, one notices an outcry for the addition additional classifications to honor overlooked contributions and fill the spirits of enthusiasts with niche passions.

My colleague previously argued for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. The same goes for strategy board titles, this being a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist when I prioritize just as with other blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case for why my demand remains most pressing above others. This is the request: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and inevitably spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason movie academies steer clear of genre categories. But it is a necessary evil in the world of gaming, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.

Present Award Structure

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these classifications effectively encompass a lot of ground, allowing placement for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Think about these recent excellent titles, all very different: the architectural riddles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Which classification works between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens outstanding logic titles launched regularly that have no home at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title received no recognition for anything during that awards season
  • A different innovative game missed out that year
  • Popular arranging title got ignored in 2021
  • Just some puzzle games scraped into independent or mobile categories

Value of Brain-Teasers

Commonly they're small games, yet the craft in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games count as the most-played games worldwide and have been for an extended period.

The famous puzzle experience competes with well-known building titles claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude so many good games out.

To emphasize again, these include experiences that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers function at the challenging frontier interactive creation, creating some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Just like film action specialists, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait decades.
