Patients Coming Off Slimming Jabs Put On Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

New research suggests that people who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt traditional diet and exercise programs.

Findings released in a major health publication demonstrates that while obese people frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"People using such medications should be aware of the danger of fast weight regain when the therapy ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain suggests a reversion to starting weight in about a year and a half.

Analyzing Therapies

The research, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

The team emphasize that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a slower creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Quick Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the drugs is key to understanding the amplified rebound.

The injections copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls appetite.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Condition?

Health authorities advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals say that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy is often long-term.

This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "underscore the chronic nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

People who have discontinued the medication explain a sudden resurgence of hunger.

"It was like something flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described a patient.

This challenge is exacerbated if users have not established permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Widespread Use

Survey data indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.

  • Use is more common among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, researchers emphasize that while these medications are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits relies on integrated lifestyle support.
